Heather is a contemporary abstract expressionist whose work bridges the physical and spiritual realms, inviting viewers to glimpse the extraordinary within the ordinary. An Indiana native now thriving in Ocala, Florida, Heather draws inspiration from life’s ordered chaos, blending vibrant colors, intuitive brushstrokes, and thoughtful textures to create art that is both structured and free.
Her paintings, rooted in a deep spiritual connection, often explore the interplay between light and dark, movement and stillness, reflecting her belief in unseen powers that influence our everyday lives. Each piece tells a story, offering what Heather describes as “planned randomness”—moments of clarity emerging from seeming chaos.
Heather’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, and she is dedicated to fostering artistic growth in her community. Through teaching art classes at the Appleton Museum of Art, she shares her expertise in art history, technique, and the vocabulary of art, empowering others to deepen their appreciation and understanding of abstract expressionism.
With every stroke of the brush, Heather transforms the canvas into a portal—an invitation to pause, reflect, and engage with the unseen world around us.
Artist’s Statement:
‘My art is an exploration of the unseen — a journey through portals into another dimension where light meets darkness, where chaos encounters clarity. Drawing from personal experiences and spiritual battles, I create visual narratives that offer glimpses into a world where the divine intersects with the everyday. Each painting is an invitation to step beyond the visible, to explore the mysteries that lie just beneath the surface of the seen to the unseen.
Influenced by abstract expressionists like Jackson Pollock and Adolph Gottlieb, my work embraces both spontaneity and structure. The dynamic interplay of vibrant colors, intuitive marks, and symbolic elements conveys the ongoing struggle between chaos and order, light and darkness. Vertical lines represent life force, energy, and movement, while horizontal elements provide moments of peace and reflection.
The series I create are portals — gateways that invite viewers to transcend their current reality and venture into a realm filled with endless possibilities. Whether it’s the bold explorations in the “Portals of Perception” series or the playful yet constrained narratives of “Colorful Points of Clarity,” each piece tells a story of transformation, renewal, and ultimately humanities search for meaning. My meaning is found in Christ – in God alone. Though I cannot see Him, I know He is there. The heavens declare His glory, I was created for His glory and I catch glimpses of Him in my everyday life. Through my art, I seek to share these glimpses of the divine, trying my best to reveal the extraordinary from the ordinary.
Art, for me, is not just about creating something beautiful. It’s about revealing the unseen, the spiritual, and the eternal. It is about capturing the moments where light triumphs over darkness, where clarity emerges from chaos. My work is deeply personal, reflecting my journey from darkness into light, my conversations with God during early morning walks, and my reflections on the world’s mysteries.
Through my paintings, I aim to inspire others to look beyond the ordinary, to find the extraordinary hidden within. My hope is that my art will serve as a reminder of the unseen realities that surround us and the divine hand that guides us through life’s complexities.’
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18
